Coach Andrew Bynum On His Path from Pro Baseball to Coaching at Marina High School

Andrew Bynum shares his journey through college and pro baseball, the setbacks that shaped him, and how it all led to his role as head coach at Marina High School.

Coach Andrew’s Background in Baseball (1:10)
Grew up in Huntington Beach and played at Ocean View High School under Shane Borowski, making CIF appearances and winning league titles three straight years from sophomore to senior season.
Played at UC Irvine as a two-way player but dealt with injuries. Transferred to OCC, where the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation and reached the Final Four.
Earned a scholarship to Division I Valparaiso in Indiana. After college, began training players and eventually earned workouts with the Royals and Diamondbacks.
Played independent ball and later signed with Quintana Roo in Mexico before COVID hit. Also played with Toros de Tijuana and Bravos de León before suffering more injuries. While rehabbing, saw the Marina head coaching job open, applied, and got the position.

The Move from UCI Back to Junior College (4:50)
Coach Andrew reflects on his time at OCC, calling it the most competitive team he ever played on. Emphasizes never underestimating junior college baseball—”ridiculously good.”

Marina Coaching Staff (6:40)
Coach Kyle Davis – Former USC player and MLB draft pick, deeply knowledgeable across all sports.
Coach Jason Mizaguchi – Strong high school coaching background; his son recently graduated from the program.
Coach Brian Sparks – Newest addition, former UConn football player with great athletic experience.

Marina Pitching Staff (8:10)
Nicholas Murrey – Dominated last season and continues his strong performance. Key in last year’s win over Huntington Beach, the first in 8 years.
Tate Morris – Long Beach State commit with some arm issues this season.
Liam Haynes – Out due to injury, but teammates Bradley Hall, Luke Graves, Brody Schatzman, and Justin Rackley have stepped up and kept the team competitive.

Up the Middle Talent (10:10)
Max Conde – A huge addition. Came over from soccer and has become the regular catcher despite not playing all winter.
Elijah Herald – Returned to the lineup with regained eligibility and has been a key presence.

Keeping Confidence Up at the Plate (11:20)
Coach Andrew stresses controlling the controllables—“the load, the rhythm”—to help reduce pressure from the uncontrollables.
Focusing on adjustments and scrappiness at the plate is a key message he’s instilling in his hitters.

The Future of Marina Baseball in the Sunset League (15:00)
With 10 seniors graduating, Coach Andrew is focused on building a culture where players understand their roles and feel confident.
He’s excited about the incoming and returning talent and the direction the program is heading.

Stance on Multi-Sport Athletes (17:20)
A strong supporter of multi-sport athletes. Encourages kids to try different sports before specializing.
Advocates for a balanced approach to youth competition—recommending fewer tournaments and more developmental training.
