Guyser, Chappell Lead Newport Harbor in Battle of the Bay Shutout of Corona del Mar (2025)

Newport Harbor kept its undefeated season alive on Monday night, defeating rival Corona del Mar 16-0 at Davidson Field. The win not only pushed the Sailors to 7-0 but also marked another statement in their growing reputation as one of the top teams in California girls flag football.

After a scoreless first half, the Sailors broke through late in the third quarter when Aliyah Chappell powered in for a five-yard rushing touchdown. Quarterback Scarlett Guyser followed it up with a three-yard run on the point-after attempt to make it 7-0.

Guyser took over in the fourth quarter, capping a long drive with a six-yard rushing touchdown to double the lead. She then added to it by hitting Blakely Irvine on a three-yard PAT pass, giving Newport Harbor a 15-0 cushion. The Sailors sealed the shutout in the final minute when a high snap from CdM rolled into the end zone for a safety, closing the scoring at 16-0.

Guyser led the way offensively, completing 14 passes for 178 yards, while also rushing for 67 yards and a touchdown. She spread the ball around to multiple targets, including Cooper Dick, who hauled in six receptions for 82 yards. Chappell chipped in both on offense with her rushing score and on defense with solid flag pulls.

Defensively, Newport Harbor was stout all night, pulling in two interceptions and holding CdM scoreless. Cooper Dick and Chappell both recorded picks, while the Sailors’ defensive front bottled up the Sea Kings’ short passing game and limited their ability to move the chains.

The victory keeps Newport Harbor unbeaten at 7-0, while Corona del Mar drops to 2-2 with its second straight loss.

Newport Harbor travels to face Los Alamitos on Wednesday evening, while Corona del Mar looks to rebound against Marina on the road during the same evening.
