Corona del Mar Capitalizes on Mistakes to Defeat Marina in Rivalry Matchup (2025)

Huntington Beach – Viking Field

The score doesn’t accurately reflect the closeness of this game, but turnovers proved too much for Marina to overcome as Corona del Mar pulled away late for a 21-8 win on Tuesday night.

Back in action after missing a few games, quarterback Delilah Meza helped spark Marina’s offense with 199 passing yards, including several deep completions. She found Emma Prelle for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and connected multiple times with Rylee Bradley (62 yards) and Sofia Naylonnavarette (79 yards). Despite the flashes of offensive rhythm, six interceptions—three off deflections—ultimately swung the game in CdM’s favor.

The first half set the tone. In the opening quarter, the Sea Kings capitalized on a broken tackle to spring a 60-yard touchdown, then added another score on a one-handed catch in the second to make it 13-0 at halftime. Marina’s receivers were able to get open downfield, but dropped passes and turnovers stalled their drives.

In the third quarter, the Vikings finally broke through defensively, pinning CdM deep and forcing a safety to cut the lead to 13-2. Marina carried that momentum into the fourth, where Meza hit Prelle for a touchdown to pull within striking distance. But missed tackles on the other end allowed the Sea Kings to extend their lead with another touchdown and two-point conversion. Just as Marina looked to rally late, an interception—Meza’s sixth of the night—sealed the game.

On defense, Bradley and Jolie Densmore led with five tackles apiece, while Skyla Chaffins added a sack and an interception. Matilda Nguyen and Hannah Meyer were among a few others who marked multiple tackles as well. Naylonnavarette also made her presence felt with a sack and pass breakup. On special teams, Jolie punted three times for 95 yards, while Sofia added a 35-yard punt.

Though the Vikings showed stretches of solid play and outgained CdM at times, missed opportunities and turnovers were the difference in a rivalry matchup that was closer than the 21-8 final suggested.

Corona del Mar will return home to host Los Alamitos on Tuesday, September 2, while Marina will look to bounce back on the road against Fountain Valley on Wednesday, September 3.
