Edison’s Lead Slips Away in 21-17 Rivalry Loss to Yorba Linda (2025)
Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Stadium (HBHS)
Edison and Yorba Linda renewed their budding rivalry Thursday night, and for the second straight season, it came down to the wire. Once again, the Mustangs found a way to rally late, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to stun the Chargers 21-17 at Huntington Beach High.
Sophomore running back Isaiah Trujillo delivered the knockout blows, rushing for two touchdowns in the final eight minutes. His 1-yard plunge cut Edison’s lead to 17-14 with 7:46 left, and after a highlight-reel grab by junior Troy Roberts set the Mustangs up deep in Charger territory, Trujillo punched in the go-ahead score from four yards out with 2:12 remaining.
Roberts was the spark throughout the night, finishing with 132 yards from scrimmage. His leaping 45-yard reception over a defender set up the game-winning touchdown and left teammates and coaches in awe. “It’s amazing to beat a great team like that,” Roberts said. “It just shows how much heart we have and how much we play like a team and when we’re down, we don’t give up.”
Edison still had a chance to answer. Quarterback Sam Thomson drove the Chargers to the Yorba Linda 14-yard line in the final minute, but penalties stalled the drive. On fourth-and-15 with 11 seconds left, senior lineman Blake Thorp sealed the win by batting down Thomson’s pass at the line. Thorp, who added a sack and two tackles for loss, credited the Mustangs’ conditioning: “That’s what really sets us apart.”
The Chargers looked in control heading into the fourth quarter, holding a 17-7 lead. Blaise Burwell, a junior transfer from Servite, provided a spark late in the first half with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. In the third quarter, Thomson connected with Samuel Edmisten on a 4-yard screen for a touchdown, and kicker Crue Bradshaw added a 25-yard field goal to extend the lead.
But Edison’s offense was slowed by mistakes and penalties, finishing with just 98 rushing yards. Edmisten, who topped 100 yards last week, was limited to 34 yards on 12 carries. Head coach Jeff Grady noted that lineman Devyn Blake, a Sacramento State commit, played only limited snaps for precautionary reasons.
For Yorba Linda, the victory was another sign of their toughness under head coach Jeff Bailey. “It was a tough game,” Bailey said. “Our theme was you got to be able to play when it’s hard, and they did.”
The Mustangs improved to 2-0 and will travel to San Jacinto on September 4. Edison dropped to 1-1 and will host Lakewood on September 5.
