Corona Del Mar Edges Out Charter Oak to Stay Undefeated, Score 28-21 (2025)
Newport Beach – Davidson Field (NHHS)
The Corona Del Mar High School football team remained undefeated with a 28-21 win over Charter Oak on Friday at Davidson Field in the battle of two 3-0 teams.
After a scoreless first quarter filled with big defensive plays, the Chargers scored first, as Jerry Rojo made an amazing grab in the endzone despite dealing with contact from the defender after quarterback Corin Berry threw the ball. Things didn’t get better for the Sea Kings, as Brady Annett was picked off by Christian Alarcon who returned it for a touchdown and suddenly, Charter Oak was up 14-0.
But Corona Del Mar didn’t let that deter them, as on the next drive, it got on the scoreboard thanks to Annett finding Garrett James for the score. After forcing the Chargers to punt again, the Sea Kings made them pay as on their next drive, Annett found JJ Haley on a 43-yard catch and run as it was 14-14 in the span of a little over four minutes being taken off the clock.
Corona Del Mar added one more touchdown right before the half ended as Annett found James again in the endzone for a 35-yard passing touchdown, putting it up 21-14 at the intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter, Charter Oak used its run game to get its way down to the Sea Kings’ one yard line where eventually, JD Sanchez, who had an interception earlier in the game, scored to tie the game at 21-21.The drive chewed up over six minutes that dated back to the third quarter.
The Sea Kings knew that a touchdown was essential due to the fact that the Chargers could chew up a majority if not all of the clock with their run game if they got the ball back. The Sea Kings did get the touchdown, as Annett threw it to Dorsett Stecker, who threw it to James on a trick play to give them the lead.
Charter Oak had one last drive to try to get a chance to score and to their credit, they got within Sea King territory. But Corona Del Mar read the Chargers’ run plays perfectly, forcing them to switch to throwing the ball.
Facing fourth and 12, Berry scrambled for his life, but only gained five yards as Scott Anderson made the game-saving tackle which forced Charter Oak to turn it over on downs. Eventually, the Sea Kings ran out the clock and advanced to 4-0.
Corona Del Mar has a bye next week, but is back in action on Friday September 26 when it heads down to Mission Viejo to play Trabuco Hills. The Mustangs got blown out by El Toro 56-14 on the road, as they didn’t have senior quarterback Tristan Zale due to a wrist injury.
