Calexico Defense Stifles Marina in Tournament Shutout at UCLA, Score 13-0 (2025)

Marina couldn’t find its rhythm on offense against Calexico on Saturday, falling 13-0 in their second tournament matchup at UCLA. Despite moving the ball at times, miscommunication and dropped passes prevented the Vikings from reaching the end zone.

The first quarter saw Calexico strike first after capitalizing on a Marina turnover, punching in a passing touchdown from Giovanna Ortiz to Arellana Garcia, but failing on the extra point. Marina had a few opportunities moving the ball into Calexico territory, but each promising drive ended with an interception.

In the second quarter, Marina’s defense showed fight, highlighted by a key interception from Matilda Nguyen to stop a Calexico drive. The Vikings’ offense responded with one of their better series of the game, including a 15-yard connection from Delilah Meza to Emma Prelle. But another costly interception ended the momentum, and the Ortiz-Garcia duo answered with their second touchdown play for Calexico and a made PAT to stretch the lead to 13-0.

From there, Marina’s defense tightened, with Hannah Meyer recording two sacks and Emma Prelle adding a pass breakup. Offensively, Prelle led the receiving corps with four catches for 30 yards, while Rylee Bradley added three receptions for 15 yards. Meza finished with 50 passing yards on nine attempts but was picked off twice under pressure.

While the Vikings came up short, the defensive unit forced turnovers and made Calexico earn their scores. With continued improvements in execution on offense, Marina will look to turn things around in their upcoming matchups, soon heading into the second half of the season.
