Mission Viejo Stays No. 1 in Alpha with Balanced Victory Over Edison, Score 37-20 (2025)
Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field (HBHS)
Top-ranked Mission Viejo continued its dominance in Orange County with a 37–20 victory over Edison on Friday night at Huntington Beach High, improving to 8–1 overall and 2–0 in Alpha League play.
Despite some self-inflicted setbacks, the Diablos once again showcased the offensive precision that has defined their season. Quarterback Luke Fahey, an Ohio State commit, threw for 374 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score. Junior receiver Jack Junker had a career night, hauling in 10 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns, while also opening the scoring with an 8-yard rushing touchdown.
Mission Viejo came out firing on its first drive, marching down the field before Junker punched it in from 8 yards out, followed by a 2-point conversion run from Davonte Curtis to make it 8–0. Edison responded with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sam Thomson to Brennan Vares, but the Diablos quickly regained control. Fahey capped the next drive with a 3-yard touchdown run and Caleb Sylvia’s PAT made it 15–6.
The second quarter featured more of Mission Viejo’s balance — the defense forced a safety to push the lead to 17–6, and Sylvia added a 30-yard field goal before halftime.
In the third quarter, the Diablos extended their lead to 23–6 on another Sylvia field goal before Fahey connected with Junker for a 14-yard touchdown strike. Edison found the end zone in the fourth quarter with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Thomson to Matthew Auau, but the Diablos responded instantly, as Fahey and Junker linked up again for a 24-yard score to make it 37–13. Edison’s Jayden Jimenez added a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the final minute for the 37–20 final.
While pleased with the win, Mission Viejo coach Chad Johnson said the team has to clean up its mistakes heading into the regular season finale.
“When you have a quarterback as good as Luke and the receivers that we have, you’re going to be able to play football,” Johnson said. “But when you’re playing in November, weather could be a factor. You’ve got to be able to run the ball, and that’s going to be our emphasis this week.”
Fahey has now topped 300 passing yards for the fifth time this season, while the Diablos’ defense held Edison scoreless for two quarters and recorded multiple tackles for loss.
Mission Viejo (8–1, 2–0) will close out the regular season at home against Los Alamitos in a matchup that will decide the Alpha League championship. Edison (5–4, 0–2) will look to regroup when it hosts San Clemente next week.
