Huntington Beach Makes History Against Los Alamitos, moves to 2-0 on the Year

Huntington Beach didn’t need to rely solely on quarterback Brady Edmunds to handle Los Alamitos — the Oilers got explosive plays across the roster, cruising to a 31-15 win over the reigning CIF-SS Division 2 champions in their home opener.

Edmunds got things started with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Kye Crump, kicking off a 21-point first quarter that put the game out of reach early. Running back Dallas Miller, a transfer from Mission Viejo, followed with a 68-yard run down to the Los Alamitos 2-yard line, then punched it in himself on the next play to make it 14-0. Miller finished with a career-high 127 yards on 19 carries.

The defense got in on the scoring shortly after. Cornerback Dylin Bruce picked off a third-and-7 pass and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown, his second interception in as many games this season, extending the lead further before the first quarter had even ended.

Los Alamitos’ offense found some rhythm late in the first half, with quarterback Luke Osborn — who took over the majority of the snaps after Elijah McDaniel started under center — connecting with a leaping Jacob Sanchez on a 17-yard touchdown with 4:53 left before the break. But Huntington Beach answered right back. Defensive end Evan Scruggs forced an incompletion on a near-sack facing third-and-10, and the Oilers’ defense followed with a fourth-down stop to get the ball back to Edmunds with 1:22 remaining in the half. Edmunds escaped pressure to complete a 49-yard pass to Skylar Robinson, setting up a 32-yard field goal from Malachi Newmaster on the final play of the half to make it 31-7 at the break.

Scruggs stayed active after halftime, recovering a fumble at the Oilers’ 17-yard line and adding a tackle for loss and a sack. Charlie Stubin chipped in an interception for a Huntington Beach secondary playing without college commits Jimmel Champion (Wyoming) and Gianni Portfilio (Purdue). Huntington Beach didn’t commit a turnover in the game but was held scoreless in the second half as Los Alamitos tried to climb back into it.

Edmunds finished 14 of 22 passing for 160 yards and a touchdown. Los Alamitos’ Kamden Tillis rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries in the loss.

The win moves No. 14 Huntington Beach to 2-0 and marks the Oilers’ first victory over Los Alamitos since 2012. No. 17 Los Alamitos falls to 0-2. Huntington Beach travels to Long Beach Wilson (0-1) next Thursday, Sept. 4, while Los Alamitos hosts Serra (0-1) the same day.
