Newport Harbor Blows Out Nanakuli 41-0 in Hawaii Season Opener

Newport Harbor kicked off its season Friday with a dominant 41-0 shutout of Nanakuli on Oahu, capping off a week-long trip to Hawaii that blended cultural experience with business on the field.

The Sailors arrived a full week before kickoff, giving the team plenty of time to adjust to the time difference and soak in the island atmosphere alongside teammates and friends. With that much time before the opener, it would have been easy for focus to slip. Head coach Matt Burns said his players struck the right balance between enjoying the trip and locking in once it was time to play.

The week built toward a pregame luau shared with Nanakuli’s players and coaches, where athletes from both programs were required to interact with one another before they were allowed to eat. It was a tradition that gave Newport Harbor’s roster a firsthand look at Hawaiian hospitality and culture, and one Burns said the team will remember well beyond the final score. Despite the goodwill off the field, there was no carryover once the game began — both sides came ready to compete.

Once kickoff arrived, the Sailors took control quickly and never let up. Senior quarterback Jordan Spigarelli was efficient and explosive through the air, throwing for 253 yards and four touchdowns on the night. His top connection was senior wide receiver Shane McKibbin, who turned in a huge performance with 143 receiving yards and two touchdowns, consistently finding soft spots in Nanakuli’s coverage. The Sailors’ offense moved the ball at will, while the defense didn’t allow Nanakuli to find any rhythm, pitching the shutout from start to finish.

The lopsided final score reflected a Newport Harbor team that stayed physical and disciplined throughout, even with the unusual buildup of a week spent thousands of miles from home. For a program that made the trip as much for the experience as for the football, Friday’s result was a clear sign the Sailors hadn’t lost sight of why they were there.
