Corona del Mar Rolls Past Edison for First Win Over Chargers Since 2019, 27-7
Corona del Mar continued its strong start to the season, handling Edison 27-7 on Thursday at Huntington Beach High to beat the Chargers for the first time since 2019.
Junior linebacker/wide receiver Nolan Scott was the driving force behind the win, making an impact on both sides of the ball. Scott recorded a diving interception at the Edison 31 in the first half, setting up a 25-yard Chuck Naylor field goal that put Corona del Mar up 3-0 with 7:35 left in the second quarter — the only points of the half. Scott nearly added to the lead before halftime, hauling in a 39-yard reception to set up another field-goal try, but Edison’s Ricardo Azernitzky blocked the attempt with 13 seconds remaining in the half.
Edison briefly grabbed the lead in the third quarter when sophomore quarterback Kellen Hairston, in relief, scored on a 2-yard run to make it 7-3. But Corona del Mar answered quickly. Scott delivered the signature play of the game on the ensuing drive, hauling in a 24-yard reception and breaking through roughly seven tackle attempts along the sideline before finally being pushed out of bounds at the Edison 2-yard line. Quarterback J.D. Annett punched it in from there to put the Sea Kings back on top, 10-7, with 1:55 left in the third.
Corona del Mar’s defense took over from there. Cornerback Hudson Zinone returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown just 59 seconds later, extending the lead to 17-7 heading into the fourth. After forcing a quick Edison punt, the Sea Kings drove for an 8-yard touchdown pass from Annett to JJ Haley, pushing the score to 24-7 with 7:42 remaining. Zack Cox capped the scoring with another interception that set up a 21-yard Naylor field goal with 5:11 left.
Corona del Mar’s defense, coordinated by Brian Pearsall, intercepted Edison four times, converting those turnovers into 13 points while holding the Chargers to just 131 yards of total offense. The Sea Kings’ defensive line also got pressure throughout, with sacks from Cade Dickerson and Arshan Habibi, in addition to one from Scott himself.
Annett, playing in relief, finished 12 of 17 passing for 157 yards and a touchdown. Edison got an interception from Dawson Steward and a fumble recovery from Sean Moran, but the four turnovers proved too costly against a Corona del Mar team that has now outscored its first three opponents 112-17.
Corona del Mar improves to 3-0 and is ranked No. 8 in Orange County. Edison falls to 1-2 and is ranked No. 11 in the county, having also dropped a 32-28 decision to Arizona’s Pinnacle the week before — a game that also featured four Edison turnovers.
Corona del Mar renews its rivalry with Newport Harbor next Thursday, Sept. 10, on the road. Edison returns home to host Palos Verdes and Nevada-committed quarterback Ryan Rakowski on Friday, Sept. 11.
