Brady Edmunds Tosses 5 TDs as Huntington Beach Dominates Western, Score 48-7 (2025)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field (HBHS)

Huntington Beach responded to last week’s heartbreaking loss with authority, blasting Western 48-7 on Thursday night at Cap Sheue Field. The Oilers (2-1) set the tone early and never looked back, scoring 34 points in the first half before closing out the Pioneers with a dominant third quarter.

Junior quarterback Brady Edmunds, an Ohio State commit, delivered his best performance of the young season. Edmunds completed 19 of 29 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns, while also running for a 3-yard score to open the game. “There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that we were going to come out and show it, and show it on the scoreboard,” Edmunds said.

Edmunds’ primary target was Troy Foster, the Colorado State commit, who caught nine passes for 184 yards and a touchdown. Foster’s 58-yard bomb late in the first quarter gave the Oilers a 14-0 lead and set the tone for a night of explosive plays.

Transfers Dylin Bruce and Steel Kurtz also made major impacts in the passing game. Bruce finished with four catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns, including a 58-yard strike in the second quarter and a 16-yard score in the third. Kurtz added five receptions for 59 yards and two touchdowns, both on red-zone grabs.

The Oilers even flashed balance in the ground game, with sophomore back Nathan Villanueva carrying 11 times for 37 yards to keep Western honest.

Defensively, Huntington Beach came up with timely stops. Senior linebacker Darby Warren recorded two sacks and forced a fumble, recovered by Logan Gray, while Evan Scruggs added an interception. The defense also held Western to just one score after the first quarter, forcing multiple turnovers on downs and capitalizing on special teams mistakes by the Pioneers.

Western (2-1) entered the game with confidence after close wins against Garden Grove and Villa Park but struggled to match Huntington Beach’s tempo. Quarterback Chance Thomas threw for 250 yards, while receiver Bunchie Young had a big night with seven catches for 146 yards. But turnovers and miscues proved costly, including a botched punt snap that led directly to an Oilers touchdown.

For Huntington Beach, the emphatic win served as a reset following the narrow 20-19 loss to Trabuco Hills. “We were going to have a wakeup call sooner or later,” Edmunds said. “I’d rather have it come sooner rather than later.”

The Oilers will stay home next Friday, September 12, for a nonleague matchup against Redondo Union. Western will look to rebound when it hosts La Mirada on Thursday, September 11.
