Clutch Gavin Guy Double Lifts Newport Harbor Over Fountain Valley in Extra Innings, 10-9 (2025)
Fountain Valley, Tom Hiroyasu Stadium (FVHS)
In a back-and-forth league battle that extended into extra innings, Newport Harbor emerged victorious over Fountain Valley in a 10–9 slugfest on Wednesday afternoon. Both teams combined for 21 hits and 19 runs, and nearly every inning featured scoring chances or momentum shifts. It was a high-stakes game between two determined squads, and it took all eight innings to settle the score.
Fountain Valley struck early with a two-out RBI double by Tyler Peshke in the first inning to score Josh Grack and opened things up with three more runs in the third, tallied by Miles Hiskey, Ethan Cortez, and Anthony Zamora. Newport Harbor responded in the third, scoring Lucas Perez off a Wyatt Gahm single. Immediately after in the fourth, the Barons hit the Sailors with another run due to a single from Josh Grack to score Isaac Lomeli making the score 5-1.
It was the fifth inning when the Sailors really found their rhythm. Newport Harbor decreased the score deficit to 4-5 with a pair of hit-by-pitches and a walk, bringing in two runs (Perez and Gavin Guy). After a pop out and a strikeout, Ryan Williams delivered a two-out RBI single to right field, scoring Wyatt Gahm from third. The clutch hit tied the game.
The Sailors’ momentum did not let up, as they added four more in the sixth—helped along by multiple walks, hit-by-pitches, and a Fountain Valley error—to take their first lead of the game at 8-5. Guy, Cole Harrison, Gahm, and Grant Horsley were the scorers.
But Fountain Valley wasn’t done. The Barons responded immediately with three straight runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game once again. Grack grounded out to score Lomeli, while shortly after, Zamora and Cortez singled to score Hiskey and Peshke, respectively. After a scoreless seventh, Newport Harbor broke through in the top of the eighth. A walk, an error, and a single loaded the bases for Gavin Guy, who delivered once again with a go-ahead two-RBI double into left field, bringing home Max Hamrock and Keoni Wun. Fountain Valley answered with a solo home run from Hiskey to lead off the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn’t enough as Newport Harbor’s defense held firm to secure the win.

Pitching
Newport Harbor relied on multiple different arms throughout the game, with Ryan Williams ultimately earning the win after closing out the final three innings. Williams allowed just three hits and two earned runs, striking out two and retiring Fountain Valley in order in the bottom of the seventh before working out of trouble in the eighth. Elijah Haseth and Henry Mann each logged two innings of middle relief, battling through inherited runners and free passes to keep the Sailors within reach. Fountain Valley starter Josh Grack turned in four strong innings, surrendering just one run and striking out one. Alyis Hernandez pitched the final two innings for the Barons and struck out two in his effort to contain Newport’s eighth-inning victory.

What’s next
Newport Harbor (2nd in Sunset League) now sits in strong position to sweep the season series against Fountain Valley, having taken the first two games by a single point. The Sailors continue to show poise in late-game situations, which could be pivotal as league play continues to tighten. Fountain Valley (4th in Sunset League) will look to regroup and salvage the series finale, knowing they were just one swing away from forcing a different outcome. These two teams meet once more on Friday, April 18th to close out the week, and based on the way this one ended, expect nothing less than another battle to the final pitch.
