Combs Leads Fountain Valley Past Woodbridge, 45-21, for Second Straight League Win

Woodbridge scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage, when quarterback Waylon Stone hit a wide-open Ryan Dumont for an 82-yard touchdown. Fountain Valley answered in the first quarter when Isaac Combs found Drake Robinson for an 11-yard touchdown to tie it 7-7. Combs then added a short touchdown run to make it 14-7 late in the quarter. Stone and Dumont connected again on a 4-yard score to tie it at 14.

Omar Khaleq’s 34-yard field goal in the second quarter put the Barons ahead 17-14. Combs then hit Raymond Dillon Jr. for a 25-yard touchdown with six seconds left in the half, giving Fountain Valley a 24-14 lead at the break.

The second half belonged to Fountain Valley. Trenton Farr ran for a 14-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and his 7-yard run early in the fourth made it 45-14. Woodbridge got a late 4-yard touchdown pass from Stone to Dumont with about five minutes left, but the game was long decided.

Combs finished 24 of 27 for 336 yards and rushed 12 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Robinson had 10 catches for 161 yards and a touchdown. Fountain Valley’s defense held Woodbridge to just 48 rushing yards. Woodbridge was also penalized 11 times, including several pass interference calls that kept Barons drives alive.

Stone threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns, and Dumont had 6 catches for 143 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors also lost key players on the offensive and defensive lines to injuries during the game.

Fountain Valley improves to 4-3 and 2-0 in the Lambda League. It follows last week’s 20-14 win at Sonora, the program’s first league win in eight seasons. Woodbridge falls to 2-5 and 1-1 in league.
