Corona del Mar Holds Off Edison’s Second-Half Charge After an 18–0 Opening Quarter (70-46)
Corona del Mar defeated Edison 70–46, with a dominant first-quarter surge setting the tone for a game Edison spent the rest of the night clawing back from. Oliver Nakra led the Sea Kings with 25 points, going 6-of-13 from three, while Derick Johnson’s 23-point night was the lone bright spot for Edison in what was ultimately an uphill climb all game.
The first half told the story. Corona del Mar outscored Edison 18–0 in the opening quarter — Johnson went scoreless in Q1 despite a pair of shot attempts, and Edison’s other starters were similarly cold as Caden Sanchez (5 first-quarter points, 4-of-4 shooting in the half) and Nakra (13 first-half points) got going early. Nolan Scott added muscle on the glass with 5 first-half rebounds, and Luke Mirhashemi ran the offense with 3 first-half assists. By halftime, CdM led 32–9. Edison showed some life in Q2 — Johnson heated up for 7 second-quarter points and Jayden Aston added a bucket — but the Sea Kings answered with 14 of their own and went to the locker room comfortably ahead.
The second half was a different game, at least for a quarter. Edison flipped the script in Q3, outscoring CdM 23–17 behind Johnson’s 13-point third quarter (3-of-4 from the field, 2-of-3 from three) and Jackson Oei’s 6-point burst going 2-of-3 from three. Teddy Goslow also chipped in 4 points in the quarter. But Corona del Mar’s lead was simply too large to fully erase. The Sea Kings steadied in Q4 — Nakra scored 8 fourth-quarter points and Ryan Mansouri knocked down a three — and CdM outscored Edison 21–12 in the final frame to close it out at 70–44.
For Corona del Mar, Mirhashemi’s 8 assists kept the offense clicking beyond Nakra, and Sanchez’s 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting gave the Sea Kings a reliable second option all night. Edison’s Johnson finished with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, but the Chargers couldn’t manufacture offense around him — the 23-point hole from the first half proved too deep to dig out of, a margin CdM never surrendered.
