Corona del Mar Rolls in Battle of the Bay, Secures Fifth Straight Sunset League Crown Against Newport Harbor (2025)
Newport Beach – Sea Kings Field
Corona del Mar handled business in dominant fashion Friday afternoon, cruising to a 16-5 home win over rival Newport Harbor to secure its fifth straight Sunset League title. The win also marked CdM’s 14th victory in the last 15 editions of the Battle of the Bay—a rivalry the Sea Kings have thoroughly owned for nearly two decades.
Senior standouts Garrett Ip and Owen Majit once again led the way. Ip opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game and added two more goals and two assists by the final whistle. Majit contributed a goal and four assists as the Sea Kings (14-5, 4-0) quickly pulled away from the Sailors with a 6-0 first-quarter blitz.
“We always have our eyes set on that CIF championship,” Ip said. “Winning league’s very important, but we have our eyes on the prize.”
Alex Aldoroty scored twice in the opening quarter, while Gavin MacBeth came off the bench to rack up a hat trick and two assists. Domingos Alves and Auggy Luong chipped in two goals apiece, as CdM’s depth overwhelmed the visitors. The defense, anchored by Charlie Hamilton and Griffin Habermehl, kept Newport Harbor in check, while Tucker Rosenberger and Jake Card helped control possession and launch counterattacks.

“It’s far more important that we get better than we focus on the Battle of the Bay and sinking the Sailors,” Mix said.
Braden Brock led the Sailors (6-10, 0-2) with two goals and an assist. Head coach Blake Lenk acknowledged that an at-large playoff berth is unlikely, meaning Newport Harbor will likely need wins in its final two games—against Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach—to keep postseason hopes alive.
Still, Lenk believes the foundation is being laid. “We look to focus on not tallying wins and losses, but rather tallying wins and lessons,” he said. “There’s always something to learn every time we get out there on the field.”
For CdM, the focus shifts to a final non-league test Wednesday against No. 7 Foothill before playoff brackets are released. Top-ranked Loyola, defending champion Santa Margarita, and Trinity League powerhouse Mater Dei loom large. Loyola, in particular, poses a major challenge—having recently handed the Sea Kings a 16-4 defeat.
“They’ve got speed and athleticism and depth,” Mix said. “Just big, strong, athletic kids.”
But Ip isn’t backing down. “I’ll take my group of guys up against any group any day of the week.”
