Corona del Mar’s Dominant Season Ends in the CIF-SS Division 2 First Round at Murrieta Valley, Score 35-14 (2025)

Murrieta – Nighthawk Stadium (MVHS)

Corona del Mar’s playoff run came to an abrupt end Friday night, as Murrieta Valley jumped out to a commanding first-half lead and never looked back, defeating the Sea Kings 35–14 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Murrieta Valley quarterback Ty Isaia had a career night, throwing for 150 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 70 yards and another score. His efficiency — just 14 pass attempts — powered an offense that struck early and often, building a 28–0 halftime advantage.

Isaia’s top target, Kayden Borden, was nearly unstoppable. The senior wideout caught eight passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns, repeatedly finding open space downfield against CdM’s secondary. The Nighthawks also dominated on the ground, rushing for 308 yards behind a physical offensive line that controlled the trenches from the opening snap.

Corona del Mar, meanwhile, struggled to find rhythm in the first half. Quarterback Brady Annett connected with Garrett James for a 19-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to finally put the Sea Kings on the board. Annett later added a 15-yard rushing score early in the fourth, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

The Sea Kings’ defense was under pressure all night. Murrieta Valley’s run game wore them down, and Isaia’s ability to extend plays kept drives alive. Linebacker Ian Gurrola and defensive back Mekhi Criss led the Nighthawks’ defense, combining for multiple interceptions that halted CdM drives in scoring territory.

Despite the loss, Corona del Mar (9–2) finishes another strong season under head coach Dan O’Shea, highlighted by a share of the Bravo League championship and standout performances from seniors Annett, James, and Dorsett Stecker.

Murrieta Valley (8–3) advances to face Rancho Cucamonga in the Division 2 quarterfinals next Friday.
