Edison Falls to San Clemente in Regular Season Finale, Awaits Playoff Fate, Score 10-9 (2025)
Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field (HBHS)
The Edison football team fell in the waning seconds off a missed two-point conversion to San Clemente 10-9 on Friday at Cap Sheue Field in the regular season finale for both teams.
By beating the Chargers and holding them to their lowest point total on the season, the Tritons finished second in the Alpha League, clinching the final automatic qualifier from the league. Edison on the other hand will have to apply as an at-large team for the playoffs.
The first quarter ended scoreless, as first downs and yards were tough to come by due to both defenses shining. The Chargers didn’t pick up a first down until the 1:43 mark of the opening quarter.
Edison’s drive reached inside the 10-yard line, but it had to settle for a 22-yard field goal, as the drive ate up most of the second quarter. San Clemente put together a quick drive to try and boot in a 39-yard field goal, but it missed as the Chargers went into halftime up 3-0.
San Clemente got the ball to start the second half and had a promising opening drive, but the drive stalled out as it settled for a 36-yard field goal to tie it up at 3-3. The drive ate up almost half of the quarter, taking four minutes and eight seconds.
After the Chargers went three and out, the Tritons had another promising drive that barely surpassed midfield. But on a fourth and one attempt, quarterback Preston Beck checked it down to Jack Flager only to be stopped by Jude Gonterman, forcing a turnover on downs.
Edison’s next drive saw Sam Thomson attempt to throw it deep down field, but was picked off by Thomas Alexander and returned to the Edison 28. The Tritons next offensive drive bled into the fourth quarter, where on a fourth and goal attempt from the Edison one, Carson Sloan ran it in for the game’s first touchdown.
Both teams went three and out on their next drive, as Edison got it back on their own 35 with 6:11 left to play. Knowing it needed a touchdown, but also not wanting to run it too much which would’ve forced time off the clock, Edison’s offense marched down the field.
Thomson led the Chargers through two fourth down plays to keep the drive going and worked the clock to their advantage. He eventually found Maddux Thomas on a touchdown catch and run, and with hardly any hesitation, Edison went for the two-point conversion.
The Chargers’ attempt was unsuccessful, as Thomson threw the ball to Logan Hampton, but the ball was batted down by Shane Kiley. They went for the onside kick afterward only for it to be recovered by Jaxson Rex, and after one kneel down, San Clemente earned the win.
It was a frustrating loss for the Chargers, who held San Clemente to 176 total yards of offense on the night while only producing 164 yards of offense of their own. Edison will find out its playoff fate on Sunday at 10 a.m. when the CIF-SS Football brackets come out.
The Chargers have a compelling argument to make the playoffs, as six of their seven non-league opponents finished with a record above .500 and clinched an automatic qualifier from their respective leagues. In addition, the entire Alpha League finished with a record of .500 or better, only making Edison’s argument of making the playoffs as an at-large more convincing.
