Edison Wins Revenge Game, Beats Clovis West 20-13 (2025)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field (HBHS)

Edison began its 2025 campaign in familiar fashion — controlling the ball, playing stingy defense, and grinding out a statement win. The Chargers defeated Clovis West 20-13 on Friday night at ‘Cap’ Sheue Field, avenging one of their narrow early-season losses from a year ago.

Quarterback Sam Thomson spread the ball around, completing passes to eight different receivers for 169 yards. His first touchdown came on the opening drive, a 12-yard strike to Ayden DeGiacomo that capped a 15-play, 80-yard march chewing up nearly 10 minutes of clock. Edison followed that with another time-consuming possession that ended in a Crue Bradshaw field goal.

“That’s game one of two of the redemption tour,” Thomson said, already looking ahead to this week’s matchup against Yorba Linda, who also handed Edison a heartbreaker in 2024.

Edison’s defense dictated the pace early, limiting Clovis West to just 12 plays in the first half and only 24 rushing yards for the game. Jude Gonterman’s second-quarter sack forced a quick punt, and Servite transfer Blaise Burwell made his presence felt after halftime with a 55-yard interception return that set up more Charger points.

“They’re a very talented offensive group,” head coach Jeff Grady said of Clovis West. “The quarterback was legit, they have some very talented wide receivers, a heck of a tailback. So if you can keep the ball out of their possession, it’s in our favor.”

On the ground, Sam Edmisten led Edison with 104 yards, highlighted by a 40-yard touchdown burst out of the wildcat to put the Chargers ahead 20-0 early in the fourth quarter. Fellow back Anthony Godinez added 63 rushing yards and an 18-yard reception as the two backs stepped into the roles vacated by graduated star Julius Gillick. Edmisten credited Gillick for preparing him for the moment: “Learning from him, I learned a lot of great things. It helped me play my game.”

Clovis West quarterback Jamar Howard, a sophomore with multiple Division I offers, showed flashes in the second half. He connected with Relando Jefferson on a 47-yard bomb before finding him again for a 1-yard touchdown, and later hit running back Major Lee for a 25-yard score to cut the deficit to one possession.

But Edison closed it out the way it started — by running the football and killing the clock. Three late carries produced a first down to secure the win and start the “redemption tour” at 1-0.

Next up, Edison hosts Yorba Linda on Thursday, August 28, in another early-season rematch with plenty of meaning.
