Edmunds’ Late Touchdown Lifts Huntington Beach Past Redondo Union, Score 19-17 (2025)
Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field (HBHS)
One week after a 41-point rout, Huntington Beach showed they can handle a tight contest too. The Oilers held off Redondo Union in a nail-biter Friday night at Cap Sheue Field, escaping with a 19-17 win.
The Oilers (3-1) leaned on the balance of quarterback Brady Edmunds and running back Nathan Villanueva. Edmunds completed 12 of 18 passes for 163 yards, while Villanueva powered the ground game with 100 rushing yards on steady gains throughout the night.
Special teams delivered an early spark when Dylin Bruce returned a kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Later, kicker Jason Dunham added two field goals, including a 29-yarder in the fourth quarter to reclaim the lead at 13-10.
Redondo Union (0-3) showed plenty of fight. Adrian Ortiz was the standout, hauling in 118 yards receiving and a 2-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Cole Leinart. Ortiz also flashed his speed on a 66-yard reception that set up points. Leinart later scored on a 1-yard plunge with just over four minutes left, putting the Sea Hawks ahead 17-13.
But the Oilers had the final answer. Edmunds capped a late drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left, pushing Huntington Beach back in front. The defense then sealed the win by holding firm in the closing seconds.
That defense was disruptive all evening, limiting the Sea Hawks to just 2.1 yards per carry and sacking Leinart five times. Senior linebacker Darby Warren led the charge with three sacks, bringing his season average to 1.4 per game. Owen Bone also played a key role, anchoring the middle and helping to stuff Redondo’s rushing attack.
The win keeps Huntington Beach’s momentum rolling as they move to 3-1. Redondo Union, meanwhile, has now lost four straight dating back to last season.
Next up, the Oilers return home against Mayfair on Friday, Sept. 19, in a matchup against a defense allowing more than 31 points per game. Redondo Union will look to regroup when they host Orange the same night.
