Marina Vikings
VS
El Modena Vanguard
El Modena Shuts Out Marina, 25–0 (2025)
The Marina Vikings faced a tough test against El Modena in their first game without starting quarterback Delilah Meza, as JV quarterback Jessie stepped in to lead the offense. Despite flashes of promise, costly turnovers proved too much to overcome in a 25–0 loss.
From the opening drive, both teams showed strong defensive efforts, forcing punts to start the game. El Modena capitalized on the first big break of the contest when a tipped ball slipped past Sofia Naylonnavarette’s outstretched hands and landed in the arms of an El Modena defender, setting up the Vanguards deep in Marina territory. A short series of runs ended with a touchdown pass to, though Emma Prelle came up big by batting down the extra-point attempt. The Vikings trailed 6–0 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Marina’s defense fought to keep the team in the game. Hannah Meyer nearly secured an interception before the ball slipped through her fingers, but moments later Jolie Densmore came away with a pick to stop an El Modena drive. The Vikings offense, however, couldn’t convert, stalling at the goal line. El Modena regained possession and strung together a quick scoring drive, pushing the lead to 12–0. With under 20 seconds left in the half, El Modena intercepted Jessie again, but Marina’s defense stood tall to keep the game within reach at halftime.
The third quarter saw El Modena come out firing, hitting long passes to quickly set up another touchdown, stretching the lead to 19–0. Marina’s offense managed to move the ball into midfield territory, but the unit struggled to find consistent rhythm against El Modena’s secondary.
In the final quarter, Marina’s defense—led by Prelle with 7 tackles and an interception, and Rylee Bradley with 7 tackles and a sack—fought to keep the team in the game. After a fourth interception gave El Modena another short field, the Vikings defense held firm inside the red zone. But El Modena eventually delivered the dagger with a deep touchdown pass to #22, sealing the 25–0 result.
Stat Leaders: Jessie finished with 18 completions, including connections with Meyer (4 receptions, 20 yards), Ellio Patterson (4 receptions, 17 yards), and Naylonnavarette (2 receptions, 16 yards). Defensively, Prelle and Bradley paced the team with 7 tackles each, while Densmore added 4 tackles, an interception, and a pass defended.
While Marina couldn’t capitalize on its two interceptions, the team showed fight on defense and resiliency in its first outing without its starting quarterback. With the return of key players like Sofia, the Vikings will look to regroup and find their offensive rhythm heading into their next matchup.
With the loss, Marina falls to 1–3 on the season. The Vikings will look to regroup and turn things around in their next matchup against Huntington Beach on Monday, August 25.
