Elijah Haseth Walks It Off: Newport Harbor Stun Marina in Series Opener (2025)

Newport Beach – Stuart Fine Field (NHHS)

In a dramatic series opener, Newport Harbor pulled off a thrilling 5-4 walk-off victory over Marina on Tuesday afternoon at home. With the game tied in the bottom of the eighth, Elijah Haseth played the hero, lining a single that brought home Wyatt Gahm for the win and set off a jubilant celebration near first base.

The Barons struck first, scratching across a run in the top of the first inning on a fielder’s choice by Max Conde that plated Nicholas Murrey. The Sailors responded in the third. Adam Martin ripped a hard ground ball into center field to bring in Ryan Williams, who had stolen second earlier in the inning.

Things stayed quiet until the seventh, when Marina broke a 1-1 tie by capitalizing on back-to-back errors and a walk. Jayden Reichelt ran in Luke Graves off a grounder, with Reichelt and Bradley Hall then reaching base and eventually coming around to score thanks to another ground ball from Luke Pratali and a defensive miscue, giving the Barons a 4-1 lead.

But the Sailors refused to fold. In the home half of the seventh, Haseth delivered an RBI single to right, scoring Gavin Guy. Moments later, Keoni Wun followed with a line drive to left to plate Lucas Perez. Brooks Francis, pinch-hitting, lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Wyatt Gahm and knotting the game at four. In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs and Martin on third, Haseth stepped back in and delivered again — a single through the right side to seal the comeback, scoring Martin for the win.

The win gave the Sailors early momentum in the three-game set with Marina and showed off their grit heading into a competitive week of league play.

Pitching

Gavin Guy got the start for Newport Harbor and was sharp through six innings of work. The right-hander scattered four hits, allowed just one unearned run, and struck out six without issuing a walk. Elijah Haseth pitched the seventh, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks. Ryan Williams took over in the eighth and shut the door, earning the win after allowing just a single hit and striking out one in a scoreless frame.

Brody Schatzman went the distance for Marina, tossing 7.2 innings. Despite taking the loss, the righty kept the Barons in the game all day, giving up six hits and five earned runs while striking out three and walking four.

Batting

Elijah Haseth was the offensive catalyst for the Sailors, going 2-for-3 with two clutch RBIs — including the walk-off winner. Keoni Wun added a hit, while Adam Martin and Gavin Guy both recorded a hit and a run scored, with Martin and Wun collecting an RBI apiece. Wyatt Gahm registered a run and a hit, while Brooks Francis also chipped in a key sacrifice fly to tie the game in the seventh.

Marina spread their offense across the lineup, with six different players notching one hit, including Jayden Reichelt and Luke Graves, who each reached base and scored. Nicholas Murrey and Jayden Reichelt both put up a run, in addition to their single hit each. Reichelt was also responsible for the team’s lone RBI. The Barons were mistake-free in the field and turned one double play.

What’s next

The Sailors will take their momentum on the road as they travel to Marina for game two of the series on Wednesday. Newport Harbor will look to clinch the series with another strong outing, while the Barons aim to bounce back and even things up at home. With both teams battling for position in the Sunset League standings, the next matchup promises more thrilling drama.
