Fountain Valley Advances Past Torrance in 5-2 Quarterfinal Win, Faces Mater Dei Next (2025)

Torrance – Kendall Field

Fountain Valley continued its postseason run with a 5-2 victory over Torrance on Friday, punching its ticket to the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals. The Barons took advantage of key defensive miscues and timely hitting to pull away, capitalizing on a steady pitching performance that held the Tartars scoreless through five innings.

The scoring began in the top of the third when Tony Zamora drove in the game’s first run on a groundout, allowing Drake Robinson to score from third following a wild pitch. Fountain Valley added a second run in the fourth after Josh Grack came home on an error during a pickoff attempt at third. Then, in the sixth, a string of defensive lapses by the Tartars helped the Barons tack on three more. Isaac Lomeli reached base and eventually scored after a wild pitch, a pair of errors, and a sacrifice fly by Miles Hiskey.

Torrance responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout. Jacob Faamasino singled to score River Martinez, and Noriyoshi Mori drove in Trevor Fortuna on a fielder’s choice, but the rally was cut short with a groundout to end the game.

Fountain Valley’s blend of aggressive base running, discipline at the plate, and opportunistic offense proved to be the difference in a game where both teams had opportunities but only one capitalized consistently.

Pitching

Logan Hunt got the win on the mound for Fountain Valley, tossing five no-hit innings while striking out one and walking one. Nathan Martinez followed with 1.1 innings of work, allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits with one strikeout. Tyler Peshke closed the door in the seventh, earning the save with two-thirds of a clean inning.

On the other side, Torrance starter Aiden Anaya was charged with the loss. He threw six innings, surrendering five runs—only two of them earned—on eight hits, with two strikeouts and no walks. Gibson Turner pitched the final frame, allowing two hits and no runs.

Batting

Fountain Valley racked up 10 hits, with Drake Robinson, Peshke, and Grack each collecting two apiece. Zamora and Lomeli both drove in runs, while the team’s aggressive base running and pressure forced multiple Torrance errors.

Torrance was limited to three hits—one each from Faamasino, Martinez, and Turner. Faamasino and Mori were credited with RBIs in the bottom of the seventh.

What’s next

Fountain Valley moves on to the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals, where the Barons will face Mater Dei Tuesday, May 27. With the win over Torrance, Fountain Valley is now one step away from a trip to the finals—and continuing what’s been a gritty and opportunistic playoff run.
