Fullerton Earns Third Shutout Behind Wise, Aviles, and Viramontes, Beats Marina 21-0 (2025)
Fullerton – Indian Stadium (FHS)
Fullerton (6–2, 2–1) continued its turnaround season with another statement win Friday night, blanking Marina 21–0 at Fullerton High School. The Indians’ defense delivered its third shutout of the year, while the offense struck quickly with a barrage of explosive plays in the first half.
Head coach Pete Karavedas, in his first year leading the program, said the mission has been clear from day one.
“When we started this thing, our goal was not to rebuild over three or four years,” Karavedas said. “It was to go from an 0–10 season to the playoffs in year one. And we’re one game away from that right now.”
Fullerton wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard, as Sergio Andrade found Luke Viramontes for a 75-yard touchdown on the opening drive. Later in the first quarter, senior running back Caden Wise broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run to make it 14–0. The final blow came on a gutsy fourth-and-1 play, when Cyrus Aviles burst through the line and sprinted 43 yards to the end zone.
The defense matched that energy, keeping Marina’s offense out of sync all night. Wise added a second-quarter interception, while Aviles recovered a fumble in the third. The Indians held the Vikings to just 265 total yards and forced two turnovers while recording two sacks.
“When I came to Fullerton, I knew this program always took pride in being physical and playing great defense,” Karavedas said. “Having guys like Ed De Avila, Jesse Smith and Jonoven Smith on staff has really kept that alive.”
For the Indians, Wise totaled 73 rushing yards, 86 receiving yards, and two touchdowns—one on the ground and one through the air. Aviles added 99 rushing yards and a score, while Andrade finished with 94 passing yards and the early touchdown strike.
Marina (5–3, 1–2) had its best chance to score late in the third quarter, driving inside the Fullerton 15. However, quarterback Francis Saporito narrowly missed a potential touchdown pass to Gunnar Mickelson on fourth down.
“Obviously we had our chances—we just have to capitalize,” Marina coach Charlie TeGantvoort said. “We have bad plays at the worst possible times and penalties that kill drives. We all need to recommit to focusing and being tough.”
The shutout marked Marina’s first scoreless performance since 2022. With the win, Fullerton pulled into a second-place tie in the Lambda League and now faces a pivotal matchup against Sunny Hills on Thursday, while Marina gears up for a home game against Kennedy on Friday.
