Gavin Guy’s Big Day Propels Newport Harbor Past Marina in Game 2 (2025)
Huntington Beach – Vikings Field
In another tightly contested battle on Wednesday afternoon, Newport Harbor rode the bat of Gavin Guy and a clutch pitching effort to edge Marina 4–3 and secure the second win of the three-game Sunset League series. The Sailors took control with a three-run fifth inning and held off a late push from the Vikings to claim the win on the road.
Marina struck early, getting on the board in the bottom of the first when Luke Pratali sent a solo home run to right field, giving the Vikings a quick 1–0 advantage. But Newport Harbor responded immediately in the top of the second. Brooks Francis delivered a well-placed single to right that scored Wyatt Gahm, who had reached on a fielder’s choice and moved into scoring position on a steal.
After both teams were held scoreless in the third and fourth, the Sailors broke things open in the top of the fifth. Adam Martin tied the game at 2–2 with an RBI single to left, bringing home Jackson Stremick. Moments later, Guy stepped up and crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall, scoring Martin and giving Newport Harbor a 4–1 lead that proved decisive.
Marina made things interesting in the bottom half of the fifth and cut into the Sailors’ lead when Jayden Reichelt grounded a single to short, bringing home Nick Mizoguchi. The Vikings continued to threaten with two runners in scoring position and only one out. But on the very next play, Nicholas Murrey grounded into a clutch 6-4-3 double play started by Adam Martin at shortstop. Although Leo Goodwin came across to score, the inning ended with the tying run left just 90 feet away.
The Sailors’ bullpen handled the rest. Tyler Clark and Keaton Anderson combined for four innings of one-run baseball, stranding runners and sealing the deal on a hard-fought road win.

What’s next
With the win, Newport Harbor improves to 2–0 in the series and will aim to complete the sweep at home on Friday when the Sailors host Marina in the final game of the set. The Vikings will look to avoid a three-game skid and salvage the finale, as it will be their final game of the season.
