Huntington Beach Holds Off Edison Comeback to Stay Unbeaten (2025)

In front of a loud crowd on Wednesday night, Huntington Beach edged out Sunset League rival Edison 14-12 in a defensive battle that came down to the final possessions. The Oilers improved to 4-0 with the win, while Edison slipped to 3-1.

The Oilers struck first in the opening quarter after Alyssa Sanchez picked off a Charger pass to set up a short field. Quarterback Roxie Shaia kept the drive alive with key completions before finding Taylor Savage for a two-yard touchdown reception. Savage then converted the point-after to give Huntington a 7-0 lead.

Later in the first half, Shaia engineered another drive capped by a six-yard touchdown pass to Kate Ross, with Savage adding her second extra point of the night to extend the lead to 14-0. Shaia finished the game completing 24 of 32 passes for 183 yards and two scores, spreading the ball to multiple receivers. Savage was the top target, hauling in 18 receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing two interceptions on defense.

Edison found momentum in the second half, capitalizing on Huntington miscues and missed tackles. Ariana Khoshkbarie hauled in a 57-yard touchdown reception to get the Chargers on the board, and later in the fourth quarter, Avea Niumata punched in a short rushing score to cut the deficit to 14-12. However, the Chargers missed both extra point attempts, which proved to be the difference.

Defensively, Huntington Beach leaned on Savage and Sanchez, who combined for three interceptions, while Zaahra Bhakta added a sack. Edison’s defense kept things close behind Katelyn Chantha’s three sacks and freshman Addison Bond’s single sack.

In the end, Huntington Beach’s early execution and defensive stops held off Edison’s late push, sealing a narrow league victory.

Huntington Beach (4-0) faces Newport Harbor in a marquee Sunset League matchup, while Edison (3-1) looks to regroup against San Clemente on Thursday.
