Savage, Caira Take Over as Huntington Beach Shuts Out Marina (2025)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field (HBHS)

It was a night to remember for Huntington Beach, and one to quickly forget for Marina, as the Oilers rolled to a 54-0 win at Huntington Beach High School on Monday night. The game drew a large and energized crowd early on, with the school honoring longtime coach Kelly Reid by retiring her jersey at halftime.

From the opening whistle, Huntington Beach controlled the pace with a fast, balanced attack and a defense that smothered Marina’s short-handed offense. Missing several key starters—including quarterback Delilah Meza and wide receivers Rylee Bradley and Alice Sheldon—the Vikings struggled to generate momentum, managing only 35 passing yards and six total rushing yards on the night.

The Oilers struck for three touchdowns in the first quarter alone, with receivers Meleah Benedict, Daisy Quatman, and Taylor Savage all finding the end zone. They added a safety to make it 20-0 before the quarter ended. Huntington kept their foot on the gas in the second, scoring three more times and taking a 39-0 lead into halftime. Despite the lopsided score, Marina’s Emma Prelle stood out on defense, pulling down an interception against Huntington’s top receiver and finishing with seven tackles.

Huntington Beach continued their dominance in the second half, adding two more touchdowns, including a two-point conversion. Marina found a few sparks of energy, particularly on defense where Matilda Nguyen grabbed an interception and returned it 20 yards, while Skyla Chaffins and Elliot Patterson each recorded sacks. Offensively, Jolie Densmore led the receiving corps with 10 yards and also handled punting duties, kicking eight times for 152 yards.

For Huntington Beach, it was a statement win powered by depth and playmaking across the roster. Taylor Savage led the way with 133 yards, while Kendall Caira recorded an interception and Mia Aish totaled eight flag pulls to anchor the defense. The Oilers’ punt team never saw the field, as they scored on nearly every possession.

Despite being short-handed, Marina showed flashes of fight. Emma’s interception and Matilda’s late pick highlighted the defensive effort, but without their offensive leaders, the Vikings couldn’t keep pace with the Oilers’ explosive attack.

Marina will host Corona del Mar at home on Wednesday, August 27, while Huntington Beach heads on the road to face Edison the same evening.
