Huntington Beach Trick Play Seals Shutout of Edison, Score 14-0 (2025)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field (HBHS)

Huntington Beach continued its strong season with a statement 14-0 shutout victory over district rival Edison on Wednesday night at home. The Oilers relied on their defense and a late trick play to improve to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in league play, staying right behind Newport Harbor in the Sunset League standings.

Senior defensive captain Kendall Caira was a force, recording three sacks and two flag pulls for loss, setting the tone for a Huntington Beach defense that stifled Edison throughout. The Chargers threatened multiple times in the red zone, but the Oilers’ defense came up big, including a leaping interception by Taylor Savage in the end zone late in the third quarter to preserve the shutout. Shelby Nguyen also added an interception, giving Huntington Beach two picks on the night.

Offensively, the Oilers leaned on quarterback Roxie Shaia, who finished 14-of-21 for 130 yards and a touchdown. The game opened with Shaia finding Nguyen on a 5-yard scoring strike, with senior Kate Ross adding the extra point to put Huntington Beach up 7-0 in the first quarter.

The game stayed tight until the closing minutes when head coach Zack Pannell called a hook-and-lateral play. Shaia completed a short pass to Brianna Massion, who pitched the ball to Daisy Quatman, and the sophomore sprinted into the end zone from six yards out with 1:08 remaining. Nguyen followed with a successful one-point conversion to make it 14-0.

Edison, led by the speed of junior Sadie Olivares (60 rushing yards), repeatedly moved the ball but couldn’t finish drives. The Chargers were stopped inside the 5-yard line three separate times, including a pick by Savage and a turnover on downs as the first half expired.

With the win, Huntington Beach notched its fourth shutout of the year and solidified its defense as one of the best in the league. The Oilers now look ahead to a pivotal matchup at No. 3 Newport Harbor on Monday, while Edison prepares to compete in Huntington Beach’s Battle at the Beach tournament this weekend.
