Shaia Throws for Five as Marina Drops Rematch to Huntington Beach, Score 35-6 (2025)

Huntington Beach – Vikings Field (MHS)

The Marina Vikings showed grit in their rematch against rival Huntington Beach, starting strong before falling 28-6 on Monday night. It was a much tighter game than the teams’ first meeting, with Marina’s defense forcing turnovers and slowing the Oilers’ explosive offense for long stretches.

The Vikings opened the game with a spark. On their first possession, quarterback Delilah Meza connected with Alice Sheldon on a 52-yard catch-and-run touchdown, stunning the Huntington sideline and giving Marina a 6-0 lead. The Oilers responded quickly, finding Kate Ross on a reception touchdown to tie the game, then took a 7-6 advantage into the first quarter break.

In the second quarter, Huntington leaned on its short passing game and converted multiple 4th downs to extend drives. Quarterback Roxie Shaia, who finished the night with 311 passing yards and five touchdowns, connected with top target Taylor Savage for a score before halftime. Savage had a career night, hauling in 12 receptions for 138 yards and four touchdowns, giving the Oilers a reliable threat that Marina struggled to contain. Huntington led 14-6 at the break.

The Oilers pulled away in the second half, continuing to look to Savage and sophomore Daisy Quatman as their go-to playmakers. Savage added another touchdown catch in the third quarter and capped the night with two more touchdown receptions in the fourth. Quatman also featured often in the offense with seven catches for 47 yards, keeping Marina’s defense on its heels throughout the game. Marina’s comeback attempts were cut short by interceptions, including two in the second half.

Despite the loss, Marina’s defense had a standout performance. Sheldon and Rylee Bradley combined for three interceptions, with Bradley also registering nine tackles and two pass breakups. Sofia Naylonnavarette added nine tackles and a pass defended, while Skyla Chaffins chipped in with five tackles.

On offense, Sheldon had a big day with five receptions for 71 yards and the team’s lone touchdown, while Meza finished with 141 passing yards and a score. Bradley, Emma Prelle, and Matilda Nguyen also contributed in the passing game.

The Vikings fell short of the upset, but their ability to slow Huntington’s offense and generate turnovers marked an improved showing against one of the league’s top teams.
