Mission Viejo Outguns Los Alamitos in Offensive Shootout, Score 76-49 (2025)

Los Alamitos – John Barnes Field (LAHS)

In a game that lived up to every bit of its offensive hype, Mission Viejo showcased why it’s the top-ranked team in Orange County with a 76-49 shootout victory over Los Alamitos on Thursday night at Artesia High. The win secured the Diablos’ second straight Alpha League title, capping a dominant 9-1 regular season behind one of the most explosive performances in program history.

Mission Viejo quarterback Luke Fahey delivered a masterpiece, throwing for 562 yards and five touchdowns while also running for another score. His precision and poise kept the Diablos rolling through a back-and-forth first half and a relentless fourth-quarter surge that saw them outscore Los Al 28-0 to seal the win.

“Sometimes you get into a track meet, and you just have to outscore somebody,” head coach Chad Johnson said. “I could not be prouder of how we responded. Luke is by far the best quarterback around — a true leader.”

Fahey’s favorite target, Jack Junker, torched the Griffins’ secondary with 10 receptions for 293 yards and three touchdowns, including an 81-yard strike late in the third quarter. Luke Karby added 172 receiving yards, and K.J. Woodbury Jr. played hero late, scoring twice — once on a 7-yard fumble recovery and again on a 48-yard touchdown catch to close out the scoring barrage.

Despite the final margin, Los Alamitos (8-2, 1-2) led several times during the first three quarters and matched Mission score-for-score for much of the night. Running back Lenny Ibarra powered the Griffins’ offense with 169 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while Colin Creason threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns, both to tight end Beckham Hofland, who also went 7-for-7 on PATs.

After trailing 49-48 entering the fourth, the Diablos seized full control. Fahey hit Junker for a 40-yard gain that set up Davonte Curtis’ 12-yard go-ahead touchdown. Then, a well-placed pooch kickoff took a favorable bounce, and Mission recovered inside the 5-yard line — Curtis scored again on the next play. A defensive interception followed, and soon after, a wild fumble recovery touchdown by Woodbury pushed the lead beyond reach.

“Football’s a game of momentum shifts,” Johnson said. “We had the big one at the right time, and once it swung our way, we never looked back.”

Mission Viejo will enter the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs as a top seed, while Los Alamitos — after an 8-0 start — will look to regroup as it turns toward postseason play.
