Newport Harbor Defense Seals Overtime Victory Against Huntington Beach (2025)

Wednesday’s Sunset League clash between Newport Harbor and Huntington Beach lived up to the hype at ‘Cap’ Sheue Field, with national rankings and early league positioning on the line. In a game filled with big plays and late drama, the Sailors pulled out a 19-13 overtime win to stay unbeaten.

The Oilers struck first in the opening quarter, finding the end zone on a short touchdown pass to grab a 6-0 lead. Newport Harbor answered just before halftime when Scarlett Guyser hit Blakely Irvine on a deep strike for a touchdown. The PAT attempt failed, leaving the score tied 6-6 at the break.

Huntington Beach regained control in the third quarter with another touchdown and successful extra point, moving ahead 13-6. With time winding down in the fourth, Harbor pieced together a gritty drive. Guyser kept the possession alive on short-yardage plays before sneaking across the goal line on fourth down from one yard out. She then found Skylie Cid on the PAT pass to tie the game at 13-13 with under two minutes left.

In overtime, Harbor struck first. On the opening possession, Guyser connected with Cooper Dick on a diving catch at the pylon for a touchdown. The PAT attempt was no good, but the defense came through when it mattered most. Huntington earned a fresh set of downs after a penalty, but Harbor’s secondary sealed the win with Dick’s interception on a tipped pass over the middle.

Guyser finished the night with 194 total yards and two passing touchdowns, while also rushing for a score. Dick hauled in five catches for 41 yards and the game-winning touchdown, adding the game-ending interception on defense. Cid contributed two receptions for 19 yards along with the clutch extra point catch late in regulation.

With the victory, Newport Harbor improves to 9-0, solidifying its spot as the Sunset League’s top contender. Huntington Beach falls to 4-1, but showed they can compete with the state’s best.

Newport Harbor heads into tournament play at El Toro High School this Saturday, highlighted by a matchup with powerhouse Santa Margarita. Huntington Beach returns to Sunset League action on Monday at Corona del Mar.
