Newport Harbor Outduels Fountain Valley as Gavin Guy Wins Pitching Battle (2025)

Newport Beach – Stuart Fine Field (NHHS)

In a tightly contested league matchup, Newport Harbor topped Fountain Valley 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon behind shutdown pitching and the lone run that came in the third inning.

Despite combining for 12 hits between both teams, neither side could break the game open, with sturdy defense and missed opportunities keeping runs off the board. Newport’s defense turned three double plays, including a crucial one in the fifth to erase a bases-loaded threat, while Fountain Valley stranded nine runners in total.

The lone run of the game came when Lucas Perez singled to keep the inning alive before Grant Horsley reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Adam Martin, who had advanced after reaching on an error. It was the only blemish in what was otherwise a strong effort by Fountain Valley starter Logan Hunt, who exited after 3.2 innings and was relieved by Nathan Martinez. Together, they allowed just four hits and one unearned run while striking out three.

Newport Harbor’s Gavin Guy proved to be the difference on the mound. The junior threw a complete game shutout, working through traffic in several innings but keeping the Barons off the scoreboard. Fountain Valley had a chance to tie or take the lead late in the game, loading the bases in the sixth and getting two hits in the seventh, but Guy shut the door with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end it.

Pitching

Gavin Guy was the star for Newport, allowing eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Fountain Valley’s Logan Hunt allowed just four hits, while he and Nathan Martinez, who allowed zero hits, combined for three strikeouts.

Batting

Josh Grack led Fountain Valley with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. For Newport Harbor, Adam Martin reached base twice and scored the game’s only run, while Ryan Williams, Wyatt Gahm, Lucas Perez, and Elijah Haseth each recorded a hit.

What’s next

Newport Harbor will look to continue on this train of momentum as they head into another bulk of league play, while Fountain Valley will aim to bounce back and convert solid contact into runs in their next home match against Newport Harbor on Wednesday, April 16.
