Sailors Sink Sea Kings in Battle of the Bay Clash, Score 21-0 (2025)

Newport Beach – Sea Kings Field (CdMHS)

The stage was set Monday night at CdM Stadium for one of the most anticipated games of the season: the annual Battle of the Bay between Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar. With Sunset League standings and city bragging rights on the line, the Sailors once again showed why they’ve been one of the state’s most dominant teams, securing a 21-0 shutout win over the Sea Kings. It was Newport Harbor’s fourth shutout of the year and their seventh win this season by 20 points or more.

The first quarter was a defensive stalemate as both teams traded possessions and fought to establish momentum. The Sailors finally broke through midway through the second quarter when sophomore quarterback Scarlett Guyser connected with Cooper Dick on a one-yard touchdown strike. Guyser then found Skylie Cid for the PAT to make it 7-0.

Harbor kept their foot on the gas as the half wound down. With just over a minute remaining, Guyser took matters into her own hands, scrambling for a six-yard rushing touchdown. She followed it up by hitting Blakely Irvine on an 8-yard conversion pass, pushing the lead to 14-0 heading into halftime.

The Sailors’ defense took over in the third quarter, stifling CdM’s passing attack and forcing quick punts. Consistent pressure up front and disciplined flag pulling kept the Sea Kings from threatening. In the fourth, Harbor delivered the knockout blow. Guyser capped another steady drive by connecting with Cid for an 11-yard touchdown. She went right back to Irvine on the PAT, sealing the 21-0 final score.

Guyser once again proved to be the difference maker, finishing with 176 total yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing score, and three PAT conversions. Cid contributed in multiple ways, catching three passes for 23 yards along with a touchdown and PAT. Irvine hauled in two receptions for 11 yards and two PAT catches, while Dick added three catches for 25 yards and the opening touchdown.

Defensively, Newport Harbor’s effort was just as impressive. CdM struggled to generate sustained offense, as the Sailors’ secondary blanketed receivers and the defensive line forced hurried throws. The shutout reflected a complete team effort, with Harbor’s defense allowing just 2.3 points per game over their last three contests.

The victory improved Newport Harbor’s record to 17-1, solidifying their spot as one of the top-ranked programs in California. CdM fell to 7-11 on the season, marking their sixth loss in the last seven games.

Next up, Newport Harbor returns home to face Los Alamitos on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Corona del Mar will look to rebound as they host Marina at 3:15 p.m. the same afternoon.
