Sea Kings Sink Lakewood Before the Second Quarter Even Starts, Wins 48-3

Corona del Mar wasted little time putting its season opener out of reach, jumping on Lakewood early and cruising to a 48-3 nonleague win to move to 1-0.

The Sea Kings needed just four minutes to get on the board, driving 80 yards on their opening possession before quarterback Luca Dinapoli connected with JJ Haley on a 25-yard touchdown for an 8-0 lead. The defense followed with an immediate answer, as Zack Cox jumped a passing lane to intercept Lakewood senior Aidan Kautsky on the Lancers’ first offensive snap, setting Corona del Mar up in Lakewood territory.

Dinapoli capitalized right away, finding Tucker Murray for a 15-yard score that pushed the lead to 14-0 with 6:42 left in the first quarter. Lakewood’s struggles compounded on the ensuing possession — a three-and-out was followed by a botched snap that forced the Lancers to kick out of their own end zone for a safety, making it 16-0.

Corona del Mar kept attacking through the air, with Dinapoli hitting Haley again, this time from 34 yards out, to make it 23-0 with 4:45 remaining in the opening quarter. The Sea Kings extended the lead to 26-0 by the end of the period, putting the game firmly in hand before Lakewood had found any offensive rhythm.

Lakewood got its only points early in the second quarter, moving the ball downfield with the help of a few penalties before kicking a 40-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 26-3. Lakewood’s defense settled in from there, picking off a Corona del Mar pass in the red zone late in the half, and neither team scored again before the break, sending the Sea Kings into halftime with a 26-3 lead.

Corona del Mar answered quickly out of the locker room. After forcing another turnover on Lakewood’s opening drive of the second half, quarterback John David Annett found Nolan Scott for a 44-yard touchdown three plays later, stretching the lead to 32-3 and effectively ending any chance of a Lakewood comeback.

Between Dinapoli and Annett, Corona del Mar’s quarterbacks combined for 283 passing yards and five touchdowns on the night. Haley and Murray each hauled in two touchdown catches, with Scott adding a third receiver to the scoring column.

Corona del Mar returns home next week to host Santa Barbara, while Lakewood travels to Paramount looking to bounce back.
