Second Half Surge Helps Los Alamitos Beat Edison in Alpha League Opener (2025)

Inglewood – SoFi Stadium

The Los Alamitos football team remained undefeated, as it beat Edison 41-22 on Thursday at SoFi Stadium in the Alpha League Opener for both teams.

The Griffins improved to 8-0, which they haven’t accomplished since 1998. They did so despite overcoming a little bit of adversity.

The first drive for Los Alamitos ended rather abruptly, as Colin Creason was picked off by Teo Hampton – giving Edison great field position for its first drive. Despite having great field position, it misfired on a 42-yard field goal attempt.

Creason made the most of Los Alamitos’ next drive, as he hit Ashton Gogue for a 58-yard catch and run touchdown for the first points. The Chargers knew they needed to match the Griffins point for point, as Sam Thomson hit Sam Edmisten on a 9-yard touchdown pass as a response.

The extra point was missed afterward, which kept Los Alamitos ahead 7-6.

The Griffins’ next drive saw them utilize Lenny Ibarra, who is committed Army West Point, as he helped get the team into the red zone. Eventually, the drive was finished off by Camden Tillis who rumbled in for the score from 13 yards out.

Right before the opening quarter ended, Edison had plans of adding a touchdown to keep pace with Los Alamitos. But the drive stalled out, as the Chargers settled for a short field goal.

After Los Alamitos was forced to punt, Edison went right to work, as it used Thomson’s accurate passing to march down the field. Edmisten capped off the drive, as he barely got into the endzone before his knee was down for the score to give the Chargers their first lead.

The Griffins punted again and Edison drove down the field and was lined up to kick a field goal. But the kick was blocked and Los Alamitos returned it to the Chargers’ two yard line, where two plays later, Creason ran it in for the score from one yard out.

Edison tried to get one more score before halftime, but was unsuccessful, as Los Alamitos went into halftime up 21-16.

The Griffins forced the Chargers to punt on their first drive of the second half and two plays after the punt, Ibarra ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run to put them up 28-16. Los Alamitos was far from done, as on the first play of Edison’s next drive, Hunter Eligon ripped the ball out of the ball carrier’s hands to give his team another offensive possession.

Eventually, the Griffins found the endzone again, as Ibarra ran it in from six yards out to extend their lead to 35-16.

Edison had a promising drive going and got down to near the red zone, but was stopped a yard short on a fourth and two run. Los Alamitos only needed two plays to score again, as Creason found Beckham Hofland open down the middle, where he evaded one tackler and evaded the rest to go in for a 74-yard touchdown catch and run.

The Chargers struggled to find their rhythm offensively, as the Griffins were ready for most of their plays. Edison didn’t score again until 4:28 left when Thomson found Matthew Auau for a 4-yard score, but the game had already been decided at that point.

Both teams are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. resuming Alpha League play. The Griffins head down to South Orange County to play San Clemente while the Chargers have their first true home game in seven weeks when it hosts Mission Viejo.
