Shelledy, Sandle Brothers Power Sunny Hills to Comeback Win Over Marina, Score 28-21 (2025)

Westminster – Boswell Field (WHS)

Marina and Sunny Hills battled down to the final seconds Thursday night in their Lambda League opener at Westminster High, but it was Sunny Hills that walked away celebrating after a last-second touchdown sealed a thrilling 28-21 victory.

Senior running back George Shelledy caught a perfectly executed 25-yard screen pass from Mikeal Khan with 13 seconds left, breaking free down the left sideline for the game-winner. The Lancers (5-1, 1-0), who finished just 2-8 last season, have now matched their win total from the previous two years combined.

“It was just a play called to get to the end zone,” Shelledy said. “We executed well and got the game-winner.”

Shelledy’s score capped a 70-yard drive engineered by Khan, who completed key passes to Kruz Sandle and Tyler Kim to move the chains. The senior quarterback was sharp all night, finishing 12-of-21 passing for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Marina (4-2, 0-1) tied the game moments earlier when quarterback Francis Saporito plunged in from a yard out with 2:34 remaining. The senior also threw two first-half touchdown passes to wide receiver Carson Hunnicutt and finished with 152 rushing yards and 84 through the air.

Sunny Hills trailed 14-7 at halftime but turned the game around defensively. Backup linebacker Brennan Cahill recorded a sack on fourth-and-9 to open the third quarter, setting up a 29-yard touchdown pass from Khan to Kruz Sandle to tie the game 14-14.

In the fourth quarter, Pierrce Sandle, Kruz’s twin brother, intercepted a pass at the Sunny Hills 40. On the next play, Shelledy broke a 60-yard touchdown run, giving the Lancers their first lead of the night at 21-14.

Marina briefly pulled even, but Sunny Hills refused to fold. The Lancers’ final possession ended with Shelledy’s second touchdown of the night — a perfectly timed screen call that stunned the Marina defense.

Kruz Sandle finished with five receptions for 130 yards, while Shelledy added 83 rushing yards. Marina’s Ben Ramos ran for 77 yards before leaving with an injury in the third quarter.

Sunny Hills continues league play Friday against Beckman, while Marina hosts Valencia at Westminster High.
