Sunset League Heat: Huntington Beach Fends Off the Corona del Mar in 4 sets (2025)
Huntington Beach – Oilers Gymnasium
In a highly anticipated Sunset League showdown, Huntington Beach protected home court with a hard-fought four-set victory over Corona del Mar on Wednesday night. With set scores of 25-18, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20, the Oilers pulled ahead in the league standings, now sitting at the top seed.
The night started with Huntington Beach coming out strong, setting the tone early in the first set. Despite efforts from the Sea Kings, the Oilers held on to take the opener. But, CdM was quick to respond. In the second set, they came out focused and aggressive, taking control behind the sharp play of Hunter Hannemann and Benjamin Brown. Hannemann was everywhere on the court, finishing the match with 11 kills, 5 digs, and a block, while Brown delivered a standout performance with 15 kills, 9 digs, and 2 blocks.
Defensively, the Sea Kings were anchored by Brogan Glenn, who had a strong showing in the back row with 10 digs. Brady Gant and Drake Foley added 7 and 5 digs, respectively, keeping rallies alive and forcing the Oilers to earn every point. At the net, CdM turned up the pressure—Gant assisted in 3 blocks, and Jack Robinson made his presence felt with 4 total blocks.
Still, it was the consistency of Huntington Beach that proved decisive, particularly in the third and fourth sets. They limited CdM’s offense to hitting percentages of .143 and .133 in those frames, and their own offensive firepower began to take over. Colin Choi was a major contributor, posting a team-best .421 hitting percentage along with 15 digs. Logan Hutnick continued his strong season with 22 kills, 8 digs, and a block, hitting an impressive .326. Ben Arguello also stepped up with 15 kills and 7 digs.
The Oilers’ defense was anchored by Aiden Atencio and Kai Gan, who combined for 16 digs, while the entire squad maintained efficiency and rhythm throughout the match. Huntington Beach closed with a .302 team hitting percentage, supported by 60 assists and 54 digs—numbers that reflected their poise and execution down the stretch.
Despite the loss, CdM showed grit and fight, especially in their second-set win. With continued contributions from standout players like Ben Brown, Brogan Glenn, and Brady Gant, the Sea Kings still remain a dangerous team as league play moves forward. The effort and flashes of dominance on Wednesday night offer plenty to build on for the remainder of the season.
